May Roses - Before and After

By nottryingforaboy | June 3, 2008

When we moved into our house almost 2 years ago, it came with 40 rose bushes. I knew absolutely nothing about taking care of roses, but I started reading- books, internet, whatever I could because I was so terrified of killing them. But they survived and still surviving!

I was so excited to uncover them at the end of this winter. This is how they looked in on the first day of May.

And this is how they look on the last day of May. Almost ready for their first flush! The one plant that is blooming now came that way from the nursery. I just fell in love with the color.

When i was 24 years old - ohhh half a lifetime ago - I moved into a house that had almost 200 rose bushes (tea roses.) It was a steep learning curve for such a youngster. I managed to kill off 50 or so that first winter — Didn’t know about covering the poor things for winter. The next year I dug them all up and gave them away to friends, family and neighbors. I saved about 25 of them for my own yard. The key for me, was to have all the roses together. The 200 were spread out around the property and were terribly difficult for me to take care of.

I drove by that house (and the former life) last week when I was visiting my old hometown and the plot of tea roses is just as beautiful as ever.

I loved having fresh roses in the house all summer and it was so much fun to take roses as gifts to people, too.

    Enjoy!
