Veggie Box #1
By nottryingforaboy | June 20, 2008
Way back in February, when it was probably 10-20 degrees here in the Windy City, I mentioned that I miss my summer Thursdays. Well, I’m happy to announce they are officially back!
Every Friday you will probably see a similar post from me. I am going to be documenting the 3/4 bushel veggie box we get from our CSA all summer long. It is seriously like opening a present every week because you don’t know what you are going to get.

The boxes are delivered to a member’s home on Thursday morning and then everyone else in the area picks up their box from the house.

Opening it is like Christmas in *June*. Early summer veggies include a lot of lettuce and spinach.

We got two HUGE heads of lettuce which are now about half the size after dinner last night.

Look at the size of these radishes. I put the pen there just for comparison sake. They are enormous.

Beets aren’t a favorite of mine and until last year, I never made them. Once we started getting a lot of them in our boxes, I learned a couple ways to make them and now I actually enjoy them.

This is a huge bag of spinach. I love it raw and cooked.

Swiss Chard was something new to me last year as well. Anyone have any good recipes?

My favorite in this box- summer squash. Yum, yum, yum. We grilled them last night. They were probably picked just a couple days ago. You can’t get anything fresher unless you grow it yourself.

Green onions. Not a favorite of mine, but LushMan likes them.

Choi was new to me last year too. I think I just stir fried it. Recipes?

We do like broccoli around here!

Look at that parsley and summer savory!

Do you know what this is? I didn’t until yesterday. It is garlic scapes. They snap off this piece when the garlic is growing so it won’t flower. That way the bulbs we get later are bigger. And they are HUGE, just wait!
I’m so happy summer is here!

Yummy! Dumb question…what is a CSA?
We have been loving our garden veggies.

I am doing the same kind of posts on my blog. We just got our 4th week of veggies. I am loving our CSA. It is our first year to do it and we have already decided we will be doing it again next year.

What a great idea ,I wish we could do that too! I have eaten beet greens and swiss chard since I was a kid we just always picked it and then boiled it till it was tender and then drain it and have it on the plate with new potatoes and whatever else and we put lots of butter and a little vinager on ours and I guess pepper /salt if you want.

Our CSA isn’t quite at the production level as yours yet - hopefully it will pick up soon.
I found some recipes for Swiss Chard in Cookie magazine - here is a link http://www.cookiemag.com/food/2008/02/chard
Let me know if you make one of them.

I never thought I’d see the day that I got excited about fresh veggies. But, it’s here. I’m still not a HUGE veggie eater, but the sight of all that freshly grown food is very cool!!

That would be so awesome! Wish we had a program like that around here.
