My second veggie box (and sorry I forgot a title before publishing)
By nottryingforaboy | June 27, 2008
Last week I received this summer’s first veggie box from our local CSA. Everything was scrumptious. Well, most everything. I wasn’t a fan of the garlic scapes- they were too bitter. I also have never liked green onions so I didn’t try those.
Yesterday I picked up box #2. And here are the fruits veggies of that box.

The box again was stuffed full upon opening.

Kolrabi reminds me of my childhood. My parents had a victory garden in a neighborhood park walking distance from our house. They grew kolrabi and I just loved it. If you’ve never had it, try it. It tastes somewhat like the inside of raw broccoli stalks, but better. You can eat it raw, I like it that way as long as it is pealed. Actually I don’t think I’ve ever had it cooked because it doesn’t last that long in *my* home. Ahem.

This is a bag of totsoi. At first I thought it was baby spinach. And I think I got it last year and made it thinking it was baby spinach. The good thing is that I will probably make this totsoi the same way- stir fried with a little garlic. I really like garlic. Especially when it is cooked into veggies. But LushMan doesn’t like it as much as me. He likes it a little, but if something is too garlicky he gets picky. We do get garlic in our box in later summer and oh-my-god is it huge and tasty.

A bunch of basil. It doesn’t hold that well in the fridge so last night I chopped it with a little olive oil and froze it in ice cube trays.

More beets. I still have the beets from last week too. I’ll make some this weekend.

Broccoli. We do like broccoli in this house. The girls not so much, but they will eat a bit.

Garlic scapes. Like I said, I tried them last week and they were too bitter for me. I took them to my mom’s and saw her cut an entire one in her salad at lunchtime. I think I had 1/4 inch when I tried them and couldn’t handle it.

More green onions for LushMan.

Kale. Last year we weren’t that excited about the kale. So I need good kale recipes please!!!!!

Lettuce, lettuce and more lettuce. Someone said that those green bags from “as seen on tv” work. Does anyone else have experience with them?

Radishes are a fave of mine. I usually end up having to do quality control on them when I’m making a salad.

Summer squash. LushMan grilled it last night and it is gone. TheYoungest even had a bit of it.

Baby turnips and spinach. Any ideas for the baby turnips?

Ok…I am a little slow sometimes…you gotta spell this out for me. I have basil as well and I need to know how/why you stored it that way. Seriously…I am not that great in the kitchen and do not mind step by step instructions.
Those veggies look delicious.

In my cookbook that the CSA gives its members, it says for long term storage you can freeze it with a little oil. Well, it is more detailed than that, but a blog I read Kalyn’s Kitchen has great instructions with pictures even.
I did decide to store it this way because I knew we weren’t going to use that much basil before it went bad. Yesterday, after I unpacked my box, I put it in a cup of water on my counter (if you refrigerate the leaves they turn black), but I was gone all day and they look wilted when I came home. So, I decided to freeze them.

I wanted to do this this year but it turned out to just be too expensive for us. Hopefully next year! I’m enjoying seeing what you’re getting though
