WFMW - Erasing unerasable dry-erase markers
By nottryingforaboy | September 9, 2008
You would think that I really like the word erase or something.
A couple of weeks ago, TheOldest started kindergarten. As my first two girls are only 13 months apart (yeah, imagine having a 4 month old and finding out you’re pregnant. Surprise!), TheMiddleChild had a hard time with this which was really no surprise. Montessori didn’t start for another 8 days which is basically a lifetime for a 4 year old. And I’m sure she was feeling slighted as TheOldest really had a lot of attention with school supply shopping and just talking about what kindergarten would be like.
Then I had a brilliant idea. I could have “Mommy Kindergarten.” TheMiddleChild and I could work on some of their work-books when TheOldest was in school. It had been a while since we used the dry-erase books the girls had and when I opened them, they weren’t looking too pretty. Looking at the “drawings” in the book, it might have been over a year ago.

I figure they were dry erase books so I got a towel and tried to clean them.
It wouldn’t come up.
Then I tried a wet paper towel, it still wouldn’t come up.
I tried dish soap, it wouldn’t come up.
Windex– no go.
Hand soap– no go.
Then I had a brilliant idea. I’ve already posted a WFMW about the merits of Bar Keeper’s Friend. I thought, what the heck, I’ll try it too.

First I put a little bit on a plate.

Then I dipped a wet paper towel in it and started to rub it all over the book. IT STARTED TO COME UP!

Yay! The book is clean!
And of course now TheMiddleChild has no interest in doing Mommy Kindergarten. On the first day that TheOldest was at school, I took TheMiddleChild to the teacher supply store and had her pick out some workbooks. She was so excited to buy them. But since then she had not wanted to do them at all. The old, but spanking clean books didn’t entice her either.
I can’t win. Too bad Bar Keeper’s Friend can’t fix all my problems.

My two oldest are 13 months apart too. Can’t get pregnant while breastfeeding - BWAH HA HA HA!
You can also use alcohol to get it off.

Great tip! I’ve tried the magic erasers before but they don’t seem to work as good in real life as they do on tv for sharpies. I’ll keep some of this on hand now. Have a blessed day, Whitney

There is a spray you can buy to clean dry erase boards. Can’t remember the brand, but you usually get a bottle free when you buy a new dry erase board. It works great, even removes the accidental Sharpie marks.

I’ve found that going over the marks with a new dry erase marker and then erasing it all works well. You can even do that to get permanent marker off a dry erase board.

I’m going to have to find some of that bar keeper’s friend.
